Chartwell Institute is pleased to announce that Dr John Greenwood OBE, widely regarded as the architect of Hong Kong’s Linked Exchange Rate System, has joined the Institute as Senior Advisor.
Dr John Greenwood OBE
Dr Greenwood’s appointment reflects the Institute’s ongoing efforts to deepen its work in financial education and contribute to more informed discussion on monetary systems and economic policy. Drawing on his decades of experience in global finance and monetary economics, Dr Greenwood will provide guidance on the Institute’s research direction, educational initiatives and public engagement.
As part of this collaboration, Chartwell Institute has also released a short animated video explaining the origins of the Hong Kong dollar peg.
In recent years, public discussion around the peg has increasingly focused on whether it should be abandoned. The animation seeks to refocus attention on the circumstances that led to its creation, as well as why the peg remains important today as a foundation of Hong Kong’s monetary stability and financial resilience.
Commenting on his appointment, Dr Greenwood said: “It has been a pleasure working with the Chartwell Institute. Initiatives such as this video help provide important historical context, which is often missing from current debates around monetary policy. In my view, there is no strong case for changing the Linked Exchange Rate System, which has served Hong Kong well over many years. Hong Kong remains a place I care deeply about, and I look forward to continuing to contribute through my work with the Institute.”
Ronald Chan, co-founder of Chartwell Institute, added: “Dr Greenwood’s contribution to Hong Kong’s monetary system is both profound and of lasting importance. We are honored to have him join Chartwell Institute as Senior Advisor. His insights will be invaluable as we continue our work to promote financial education, and to tell Hong Kong’s story with greater clarity and context.”
