In May 2024, Chartwell Institute hosted its inaugural event with a memorable dinner in Hong Kong featuring Dr. Mark Mobius, the legendary emerging market fund manager. Among the attendees were prominent figures from family offices and the local business community. Our co-founders, Ronald Chan and Kylie Wong, had the privilege of interviewing Dr. Mobius, touching on various aspects of his illustrious career and investment philosophy.
Dr. Mobius's connection with Hong Kong dates back 40 years when he led Franklin Templeton’s charge into the Asian markets. In 1987, Dr. Mobius was tasked with managing one of the world’s first emerging market funds by Sir John Templeton, and he picked Hong Kong as a base to run it. Reflecting on the evolution of the Hong Kong stock market, he painted a vivid picture of resilience and transformation. From the highs of rapid economic growth to the lows of political turmoil, Hong Kong has weathered it all, emerging stronger and more dynamic.
During the interview, Dr. Mobius also discussed how technology, artificial intelligence in particular, has transformed the investment landscape. He pointed out that advancements in technology have not only increased market accessibility but also enhanced the ability to analyze and respond to market trends in real time.
A recurring theme throughout the dinner was Dr. Mobius's dedication and passion for his work, even in his 80s. When asked what motivated him to continue working so hard, he responded with a simple yet profound answer: his passion for learning and exploring new opportunities keeps him energized. He encouraged everyone to find their passion, as it is the key to a fulfilling and productive life.
The dinner concluded with a lively Q&A session, where attendees had the opportunity to engage directly with Dr. Mobius. His candid responses left a lasting impression on everyone present. The evening not only offered an opportunity to gain investment insights but also served as a reminder of the importance of balancing professional ambitions with personal well-being.
